Description
The Crown Hotel, located at 101-102 Queen Street in Newton Stewart, is a later 19th-century inn that may have earlier origins. It is a two-storey building with five bays, featuring a rendered and painted exterior with painted raised margins.
On the ground floor, there are two doorways on the left, which were originally wider and served as a pend, but have been narrowed and now feature a Roman Doric pilastered doorpiece. To the right, there is a wide doorway that is also pilastered and topped with a block pediment. The rear of the building has two-storey wings connected by a flat-roofed section.
All windows are bipartite, except for the second from the left, and they are all sash and case with two-pane plate glass glazing. The building has an eaves cornice and a deep parapet adorned with a decorative iron balustrade. There are four canted lead-roofed dormers, and all ridges are finished with decorative iron brattishing. The building features corniced end and axial stacks with octagonal cans, and it is topped with slate roofs.
