Description

Mcmillan Hall, located at Dashwood Square in Newton Stewart, was designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear and completed in 1884. This two-storey hall features a symmetrical French Renaissance style, with a five-bay elevation facing Dashwood Square and a four-bay return elevation to Queen Street. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, and all windows are tripartite, with sash and case designs. The ground floor has two-pane glazing, while the first floor features multi-pane top-hoppers. The end bays are advanced and topped with high pyramidal French roofs at the angles.

The main entrance is centrally located on the Dashwood Square elevation, featuring a pilastered doorpiece with a consoled pediment adorned with acroteria and a panelled double-leaf door. The date 1884 is inscribed in the tympanum above the entrance. A band course and cornice run above both the ground and first floors, with a plain eaves parapet. The eaves band is inscribed with "The Mcmillan Hall" at the center.

The building has slate roofs and features a pair of tall wall head square stacks at the penultimate bays. Additionally, there are decorative cast-iron railings along the Dashwood Square elevation, complete with an ornamental archway and a lamp bracket over the gateway.
