Description

Lydd Cottage, also known as South Lodge, is a mid-19th century single-storey lodge house that has undergone later additions and alterations. It features a three-bay classical design and is part of a pair of lodge houses. The exterior is constructed of finely droved ashlar with some areas of render repairs and polished dressings, including a base course, cornice, and blocking course.

On the north elevation, there is a canted three-light bay at the center, flanked by a window on each side. The left bay, which was formerly a door, is now partly blinded. The east elevation includes the side of the main building with a blinded window, as well as a later glazed lean-to that has a partly glazed door. There is also a later piended addition on the outer right, featuring a rendered wall and a window under the eaves.

The south (rear) elevation has a later piended and rendered addition on the outer right, which includes a timber mullioned bipartite window. Additionally, there is a modern platformed addition in the southwest re-entrant angle with two windows. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although the modern platformed addition at the rear has modern glazing. A brick stack is located at the center of the rear of the main building, while there is a rendered brick stack at the rear of the projection to the west.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1996.

Surrounding the property are ashlar quadrants with a base course and coping, along with cast-iron railings that have fleur-de-lys-headed shafts. The square-plan rendered gatepiers have pyramidal coping and form a pedestrian entrance that is complemented by a fine cast-iron gate.
