Description
Smiddy Cottage is a later 19th-century single-storey cottage with an attic, forming a three-bay rectangular plan that is part of a terrace. The exterior is cement rendered, with whinstone and sandstone rubble at the rear, and features droved sandstone ashlar dressings. It has a base course, Tudor-style hoodmoulds above each opening on the front elevation, and rusticated quoins.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is a boarded door in the center with a 2-pane fanlight above it, flanked by a window on each side. The south elevation has a gabled roof with a window at both the ground and attic levels on the right. The west elevation is not fully visible as of 1996, but it includes a central lean-to glazed addition, a lean-to addition in the left bay, and a blank bay on the right.
The east and south elevations feature 6-pane timber sash and case windows. The slate roof has purple slate fishscale bands on the east side, with coped ashlar skews and scroll-bracketed skewputts. A modern box dormer is located at the center of the west pitch, and there is a brick wallhead stack at the apex of the south elevation. The interior was not seen in 1996.
