Darnlee, Waverley Road, Melrose

Darnlee, located on Waverley Road in Melrose, is a building dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with alterations made by Brown and Wardrop in 1872. The original structure is two stories tall and has three bays, featuring a central doorpiece with pilasters. The exterior is harled with an ashlar plinth, band-courses, window detailing, and angle-margins. The 1872 renovations included the addition of a central canted bay that extends through both the ground and first floors. The original doorpiece was reused and now includes a cast-iron balcony on the first floor, along with a pierced lozenge parapet at the top of the wall, which is adorned with vases. The building has a slated bell-cast roof with tall rectangular stacks that have cavetto cornices on the flanks. Additionally, there is a large modern two-storey flat-roofed extension at the rear.
