Description
Harleyburn, located on Chiefswood Road in Melrose, is an Italianate building designed by Brown and Wardrop in 1872. It features a symmetrical block with two storeys and an attic, along with a lower two-storey service court to the east.
The north front has a central entrance bay with a projecting Ionic porch and a balustraded balcony above. There is a triple light round-headed window on the first floor, and the outer bays are advanced with rusticated quoins and bipartite windows. The building is constructed from coursed red sandstone with contrasting dressings, and it has a bold projecting cornice at the wall-head, a piended and platformed roof, and rectangular coursed stacks. The service court, slightly recessed to the east, has simple rectangular windows except for the advanced end bay, which features round-headed bipartite windows on the first floor and a simpler projecting cornice at the wall-head with a hipped roof.
On the west front, there are canted bays at the ground level with ball finials at the angles, and two platform dormers in the attic. To the south, there is a later single-storey billiard room addition, which has a three-bay centre door with a semi-circular pediment above and a piended roof behind a blocking-course. The interior remains largely unaltered, except for the replacement of the original stair balusters and rail with a simple neo-Georgian pattern and the replacement of the drawing-room fireplace.
