Description
High Cross Church, located on High Cross Avenue in Melrose, was designed by Peddie and Kinnear in 1866, with a tower added in 1872. This Romanesque hall church features four bays and a broad gabled front facing north. There are gabled doors on both the left and right sides, with a shallow projecting narthex in between. The narthex includes a glazed dwarf arcade supported by sculptured capitals and features alternating red and yellow voussoirs. Above this, there is a large plate traceried rose window. At the northeast angle of the church stands a massive tower with three stages; the second stage contains a clock, while the belfry in the third stage has triple round-headed louvred openings on each face and is topped with a corbelled octagonal spire. The front and tower are constructed of snecked bull-faced rubble with stugged and polished dressings, while the flanks and rear are made of snecked rubble.
