Description
The Community Centre on Albert Road in Eyemouth was built in 1879 and enlarged around 1910. It features a large U-shaped block designed in the Tudor-Gothic style, constructed from snecked rubble with polished ashlar dressings and a slated roof. The symmetrical front faces west and includes a two-storey central block. On the ground floor, there is a four-centred entrance beneath a square hood-mould, flanked by narrow segmental-headed windows. Above the entrance, a pair of lancet windows is set under a single four-centred head. At the apex of the gable, there is a truncated belfry supported by paired corbels, which flank a shield displaying the date. A rectangular brick stack with a corbelled cope is positioned at the ridge.
To the north and south of the central block are single-storey pavilions featuring stepped centre tripartites under hood-moulds, with louvred ventilators at the apex of their gables. The linking wings to the central block have paired tripartites. The south pavilion extends westward as a wing, which originally had tripartites and remnants of brick chimneys at the wallhead, flanking a lower gabled outshot that contains the entrance to the former Infants School. A second, taller gabled projection at the west end originally terminated this wing but was later extended to the west in a style that closely matches the original. The north wing is similar in design but does not have the later extension. Both wings feature square louvred ventilator fleches.
