Description
Mertoun Cottage is a mid to later 18th century, two-storey, three-bay thatched cottage located on Main Street in Town Yetholm. It is part of an irregular terrace and features a symmetrical design. The cottage is rendered with black painted timber lintels and has a base course. The walls were probably originally battered but are now rendered.
On the east elevation, which serves as the entrance, the bays are grouped towards the centre. It has small windows and a doorway in the central bay that features a boarded door and a bracketed canopy.
The south elevation has a gable end with a window to the right at ground level and a small window to the right in the gablehead. The cottage has plate glass in sash and case windows and a steeply pitched reed-thatched roof with tiled ridge coping. There is a substantial harled chimneystack on the south gablehead and a harled mutual chimneystack on the north gable.
