Description

The Walled Garden at Springwood House is an ornamental flower garden from the early 19th century, which was extended and altered later in the 19th century. The north, south, and east walls still stand and are constructed of rubble.

The north wall features a brick-lined south face with a central round-arched gateway that has ashlar dressings and a hood-mould. It includes a panelled and 'fretted' chinoiserie two-leaf door. The stepped east wall has been heightened with red sandstone rubble at the south end and contains an early droved ashlar gateway with a datestone from 1807 and a modern concrete lintel. There are wall buttresses on the outer (east) face.

The south wall has a door with droved ashlar margins and a vertically boarded door to the left (west). The principal entrance is a raised off-centre gateway, which is a new opening introduced for caravan access, featuring droved ashlar margins, a block pediment, and a cast-iron urn finial. The wrought-iron gate has scallop decoration at the lower section, and there is a cast-iron urn finial at the outer southeast angle of the south wall.

In front of the south wall, there is a fenced enclosure that likely served as a vegetable garden, retaining some of the original wrought-iron decorative fence with scallop detailing.
