Description

Cauld/caul (= weir) on the River Tweed of comparatively

early date, built immediately above the confluence with the

the Teviot, to funnel water in to the mill on the east

bank; about 400m in length, set diagonally across the

river, appears to be built in 2 sections but either using

the thickly-wooded islet "Kelso Anna" as a stepping stone

or, alternatively, partlu buried by the latter. Difficult

to date, but parts may be medieval as a mill associated

with the nearby Abbey existed at Kelso from an early

date, and Slezer's view (pub 1693) appears to show a caul

(though no "Kelso Anna"). Stone-built, some concrete

repairs; paving with framework of timber baulks at the

shallower west end, may be of comparatively recent

(?19th century) work; steel and concrete salmon leap

also close to the west bank, is the only modern-looking

part, but it occupies the site of the salmon leap marked

on the 1857 OS map.
