Description

126 Roxburgh Street in Kelso is probably an early 19th-century building that stands two stories high with an attic and features three widely spaced bays. It has a deep plan and has been used as a domestic residence in recent times, although the distinctive arrangement of the door on the north side suggests it may have originally served a different purpose, possibly related to craft work. The building has a pitched roof covered with slates and a very broad ashlar skew at the west gable, although the original pair of broad brick end stacks have been lost. There are two small piend-roofed dormer windows that are widely spaced above the outer bays on the north and south sides.

On the north (street) elevation, the building is constructed with stugged ashlar courses that have raised margins and neatly stugged tails, along with droved quoins. The openings are symmetrical, with the entrance located at the center. The lintel of the door rises above the level of the ground and first floor, meeting the cill of the central first-floor window. The cills of the flanking windows are at pavement level, indicating the presence of a basement. The windows feature 12-pane sash and case glazing, which was boarded up in 1991 after being installed in 1979. To the left of the door, there is a boot scraper recess, and a small decorative cast-iron post box is incorporated into the west gable on the left-hand side.

The south (rear) elevation is made of random rubble with harled surfaces and droved window dressings. It has a central door with 12-pane sash and case windows at both the ground and first floors to the left, while narrower 8-pane windows are located at the first floor center and right. The openings are widely spaced and symmetrical, except for the off-center door.
