Description

The Free Church on Roxburgh Street in Kelso was built between 1865 and 1867 by F T Pilkington and is a distinctive example of English Decorated Gothic architecture. The building features a tall gable at the west end, which includes a central projecting gabled entrance porch. This porch rises above arcaded cusped windows that illuminate the vestibule. Above the vestibule, there are two-light windows with cusped designs and trefoils in the spandrels of the central mullion, topped by a cusped vesica in the attic of the gable. To the north of the entrance, there is a massive three-stage tower with a spire. The belfry has tall lucarnes that support an octagonal spire, which is adorned with two-tier tabernacles and tall slated pyramidal roofs at the corners.

Inside, the church has a complex layout featuring a steeply raking gallery to the west and an open timber roof with a central boss. The original gallery front and pews remain, although they have been stripped and light stained. The interior also includes a 20th-century communion table, pulpit, and organ case.
