Description

Achnachairidh, located on Bakers Road in Gattonside, is a single-storey, T-plan, flat-roof Modernist house designed by Duncan and Dorothy Cameron in 1967. It is constructed of brick and glass and is situated on a gently sloping garden site that offers an open view of the River Tweed and the Eildon Hills. The house features a drive-in garage that creates a T-junction with the central core arrangement of living spaces, while the bedrooms are located in the outer arms. The building is made of sand lime brick and includes floor-to-ceiling plate glass timber-framed windows, along with a painted timber fascia board. There is a small sun-room addition to the principal bedroom on the east elevation, added by Duncan Cameron in 1994.

The windows are predominantly timber-framed with single glazed unframed sliding doors.

Inside, the house retains its original circulation of spaces, showcasing a Modernist interior with an exposed pinned timber structural framework that defines the layout of the main living areas. It features hardwood sliding doors with metal fittings, boarded timber ceilings, and fitted cupboards and shelving in the kitchen and bedroom partition walls. The property has underfloor heating and is currently enhanced by various items of contemporary 1960s Scandinavian furniture, as of 2009.
