Description
1 Clapper Lane is a single-storey house built in 1959 by Stuart Renton, with later extensions added in 1964 and 1974. The house has a roughly U-shaped layout, featuring a flat-roofed entrance bay flanked by a flat-roofed garage to the north and a monopitch-roofed main block to the south, all arranged around a courtyard. The 1964 extension is a single storey to the east, while the 1974 addition is a two-storey structure located behind the garage. The exterior is finished with white painted brick and varnished timber weatherboarding, topped with a leaded roof.
The central block includes a glazed door to the right of a timber boarded screen facing the courtyard. The south block has a sloping monopitch roof and deeply overhanging eaves that extend over nearly continuous glazing on the south elevation. The east elevation features three large windows beneath a timber boarded cornice, which align with the rise in the ground. The later two-storey addition to the north has a square plan. The fenestration consists of large rectangular windows with timber surrounds, clerestory windows that follow the roofline, and sloping glazed panels beneath boarded timber panels.
Inside, the home showcases a highly distinctive modernist open-plan design with notable Scandinavian influences. There is a wealth of exposed timber, including ceilings, boarded timber doors, and integrated storage units, which contrast with the white brick. The interior features a series of full-length and clerestory windows. Notable elements include a full-height chimney breast made of white brick, a pivoting door to the study, Swedish mosaic tiles in the bathroom, and suspended storage units in the bedrooms. The original door furniture has been retained throughout the house.
