Description

Grianan is a single-storey, roughly T-plan Modernist house built around 1964 by Stuart Renton, with an extension added in 1994. It is located on a sloping promontory on the north side of Loch Rannoch. The house features monopitched roofs and an integral open terrace to the west. The exterior is finished with rendered, white-painted brick and black-painted weatherboarding above the glazing on the west side. The base course on the west and south is made of bare rubble. The building has predominantly large rectangular window openings on the west and south sides, with smaller windows on the other elevations.

On the west elevation, there is a large open terrace to the left, with a high end wall at the far left and recessed full-length fenestration behind. To the right, there is an advanced two-bay section with an off-centre ridge stack, and a covered terrace at the far right that faces south. The windows are mainly large, timber-framed sliding windows on the west and south sides, with smaller timber-framed windows elsewhere. The roof is covered with interlocking tiles, while the later extension has a slate roof.

The interior, which was seen in 2011, is highly distinctive and little altered, featuring an open-plan design with notable Scandinavian influence and several original fittings. The walls are predominantly white engineering brick, complemented by a wealth of exposed varnished boarded timber. Steps lead down to a sunken living room that includes a free-standing full-height brick chimneypiece. The galley kitchen has integrated timber storage units, and original door furniture is present throughout the house.
