Description
Meadowland is a modern, single-storey house designed by Morris and Steedman Architects in 1964, with additions made in 1976 by the same firm. The house has a long, rectilinear shape and a flat roof, featuring a principal living block that rises to form a clerestory over the living room. A 1976 pavilion, which includes guest accommodation and a garage, is connected to the main house by a long glazed link that faces the garden. The exterior is constructed with brown Leicester brick walls, mahogany fascia, and large areas of glazing, while the pavilion is built with brown Derbyshire brick. The house faces west, with the main rooms overlooking the garden and the River Tay, and the entrance is located on the east side.
The west elevation features a six-bay principal block on the left, with a horizontal strip of bedroom windows under the eaves. The glazing steps down to the right, culminating in a fully-glazed wall of the living room. The flat roof sweeps up over the living room, incorporating a horizontal band of clerestory windows facing south. To the right, there is a slightly recessed dining area with a glazed roof over the re-entrant angle, creating a covered patio. A roughly seven-bay glazed conservatory link extends from the dining room to the two-bay guest pavilion, which has full-height windows that return at the corners.
The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, is unobtrusive and dominated by the rear brick wall of the glazed link. The principal house is advanced to the right, featuring a recessed glazed entrance doorway with sidelights and a wall that extends forward to enclose an entrance courtyard. To the left of the door, there is a two-bay kitchen window under the eaves and a plain timber-boarded side door. A three-bay garage block is advanced to the right, with metal roll-up doors set between brick piers.
Inside, the house remains almost unaltered, except for the kitchen, utility room, and one bathroom, which have been re-fitted. The open-plan sitting room has a timber-boarded ceiling and Canadian maple floorboards, with folding doors leading to the dining area and study. Internal doors are made of obeche, featuring handles by Assa from Sweden, and there are fitted cupboards in the hall and bedrooms.
