Description
Trevor Dannatt designed this single-storey, rectangular Modernist house between 1964 and 1967, built on the footprint of an earlier structure within an open parkland setting. It forms a group with Goodall Cottage, garden walls, and terraced areas, creating a deliberate composition. The house is primarily constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with some sections of painted white brick. Horizontal timber-clad canopies extend along parts of the building. The south elevation features a long, full-height glazed curtain wall, with high-level windows recessed within the roofline. A shallow-pitched roof extends to the far right, covering a recessed veranda. The north (courtyard) elevation includes a timber-panelled door, centrally positioned with a narrow, full-height glazed margin light to the right, along with a metal doorbell and light switch plate and a concrete light box. High-level, narrow horizontal glazing is positioned to the left, with a stepped timber fascia above. To the west, a sectional block is oriented at a right angle to the main block and features a mono-pitch roof, full-height glazing, overhanging eaves, and a tall, square-plan brick chimney stack (painted white). Plate-glass windows are fitted with timber and aluminium frames throughout.
The interior is largely intact and characterized by high-quality boarded timber surfaces and integrated fixtures. Original features include recessed light fittings, glazed margin lights, and sliding cupboards. Oak-panelled floors and ceilings are found in the main living, dining, and gallery areas. A step leads to the sectional living room, which includes a recessed fireplace with a floating mantel and brick flue, a timber beam support with horizontal beams near the ceiling, and a pine-panelled ceiling. The kitchen has a quarry tile floor and fitted cupboards and shelves. A heavy oak drop-down shutter covers a serving hatch with an integrated hotplate connecting the kitchen and dining area. Bedrooms and the dressing room contain fitted cupboards and shelving units. A room in the north-east corner features toe-to-toe beds, while the rear corridor has full-height storage cupboards and a concertina shutter to a lower window. An oil-fired boiler is located in the basement.
Goodall Cottage is a single-storey, rectangular-plan, mono-pitch house designed in a style echoing the main house on a smaller scale. It has a reconstructed rubble wall to the west elevation and a horizontal window within a timber-clad infill structure extending to the roof height. The garden and south elevations have painted white brick walls and overhanging eaves, along with a tall, square-plan brick stack. A screen wall extends to the south.
Reconstructed sandstone and brick walls define terraces, gardens, and courtyard areas. A small, flat-roofed brick outbuilding is adjacent to the east wall of the raised walled garden area, to the south of the cottage.
