Description
Rannoch Power Station, part of the Grampian Hydro Electric Scheme, was designed by consulting engineer William Halcrow and built by Balfour Beatty between 1931 and 1933. This two-storey, four-bay power station features a rectangular plan and is constructed in a simple classical style, elevated on piers above the tailrace at the front (south) side. The building has large arched windows on the ground floor, with a painted render finish and painted rock-faced long and short quoins. The basement is set back behind a pilastered and dentilled bridge over the tailrace, showcasing an arcade of round-arched windows.
The structure includes a coped base course with recessed fielded panels, full-height pilasters with fielded panels, a string course, and a banded cill course at the first floor. The deep corniced eaves course adds to its architectural detail. The ground floor features deep arcaded and keystoned shouldered arched multi-pane windows, while the first floor has bi-partite multi-pane windows with advanced cills.
On the east elevation, there are three broad bays with a lower recessed single bay to the right (south). A large mahogany door is centrally located within a keystoned shouldered arched surround, flanked by pilasters, with a shouldered arched window above and a rectangular multi-pane window at the first floor. The lower bay has a tall keystoned shouldered arched window with a rendered mullion.
The north elevation mirrors the south elevation but includes blind rectangular windows at the ground floor and keystoned shouldered arched windows at the first floor, some fitted with louvers. A small single-storey building is located to the right (west).
The west elevation is similar to the east but features a window instead of a door. The building predominantly has small multi-pane glazing in cast-iron frames, with cast-iron rainwater goods integrated into the cornice.
Inside, the power station has a plain interior with a large roller crane off a steel gantry in the main double-height space, along with some steel gantries at the rear that create upper floors.
