Description
The Rannoch Valve-House, part of the Grampian Hydro Electric Scheme, was designed by consulting engineer William Halcrow and constructed by Balfour Beatty between 1931 and 1933. This single-storey and attic building features a rectangular plan and is designed in a simple classical style. The exterior is finished in painted render and includes large arcaded arched windows on the ground floor. The structure is supported by full-height pilasters made of coursed rubble and has a band course at the attic level. The corniced eaves course is complemented by a blocking course at the corners.
The ground floor has a deep design with round arched multi-pane windows, while the attic features small rectangular multi-pane windows set in recessed surrounds. The eastern elevation has a large deeply recessed doorway at the center, flanked by plain fielded panels, while the western elevation includes a single round arched window at the center. The building predominantly uses small multi-pane glazing in cast-iron frames, and the cast-iron rainwater goods are integrated with the cornice.
Inside, the valve-house has a plain interior that includes a roller crane mounted on a steel gantry.
