Dairy School, Auchincruive

The Dairy School at Auchincruive, designed by Alex Mair between 1929 and 1931, features late 20th century additions at the rear. This symmetrical, two-storey building has a piend roof and a classical style, with single and two-storey wings extending to the rear to create an inner courtyard, along with single-storey flat-roofed extensions. The basecourse is made of red brick, complemented by red sandstone dressings and white painted harl, with regular fenestration throughout.

On the principal elevation, there is a central entrance bay with a pediment, topped by an enclosed bellcote featuring a leaded ogee roof. The entrance has a moulded door surround with a segmental pediment, a two-leaf timber outer door, and a margin-paned fanlight above the letterbox. Flanking the entrance are narrow lights, and there are three windows on the first floor. The flanking ranges consist of seven bays, all with regular fenestration and cills.

The windows are metal small-pane casements, and the building has cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers. The roof is covered with grey graded slates.

Inside, the space is simply tiled. A notable feature is a 19th century granite cheese press, which is fixed to the floor and was donated by Archie McClelland in 1980.
