Description

Tummel Power Station, part of the Grampian Hydro Electric Scheme, was designed by consulting engineer William Halcrow and built by Balfour Beatty between 1931 and 1933. This large, two-storey and attic power station features a roughly rectangular plan with seven bays, designed in a plain classical style. The exterior is finished with painted render and includes painted rock-faced long and short quoins. The second and fifth bays are recessed, and there are full-height pilasters, a banded string course at the second floor, and a deeply corniced eaves course. The advanced bays have large fielded panels on their returns. The ground floor has a deep design with arcaded, keystoned, shouldered arched multi-pane windows, which do not extend full-height to the terminal bays. The first floor features bi-partite multi-pane windows with advanced cills.

On the west elevation, there are five bays, with a lower recessed single bay to the right. A large mahogany door is located roughly at the center within a keystoned shouldered arched surround, flanked by tall keystoned round-arched windows (paired to the north). Above, there are rectangular multi-pane windows. The recessed bay also has similar windows set in recessed surrounds.

The north elevation is predominantly plain, with some corniced projecting blocks, pilasters, and fielded panels. A row of multi-pane rectangular windows is located at the first floor in recessed surrounds.

The east elevation mirrors the west but features a large multi-pane window instead of the mahogany door.

The building predominantly has small multi-pane glazing in cast-iron frames, and the cast-iron rainwater goods are integrated with the cornice.

Inside, the power station has a plain interior with a large roller crane on a steel gantry in the main double-height space. There are additional steel gantries at the rear that create upper floors, and the original control panel is located on the upper floor at the rear, integrated with a tiled floor.
