Description
Port An Eilean is a two-storey and attic former sporting lodge, dating from 1868 and designed by Andrew Heiton Junior and Thomas Arthur Heiton. It occupies an elevated position within extensive grounds, overlooking a terraced garden to the south and Loch Tummel beyond. A service wing extension was added to the northwest (rear) before 1898. The building is of irregular plan and Italianate style, with multiple gabled forms. A square-plan, piended roof tower, arched entrance porch, and decorative metal window balcony are prominent features. The lodge is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins. Architectural details include moulded architraves, decorative solum vents, a ground floor cill course, a string course to the first floor, and blind bull's eye windows to projecting gables. The windows are timber sash and case, with predominantly round-arched first-floor windows containing four panes of glazing. Slate roofs feature timber bargeboarding, decorative purlins, paired bracketed eaves, and timber eaves displaying the Duke of Atholl insignia. Multiple corniced and shouldered end and ridge stacks are present, along with lead flashings, and cast iron decorative hoppers and downpipes.
The interior, viewed in 2015, showcases a mid-19th century decorative scheme, including a timber imperial staircase to the central hall. Detailed timber and plasterwork is found throughout, especially within the ground floor public rooms. The entrance hall features a decorative encaustic tile floor and timber panelling, while decorative chimneypieces, some marble and others with overmantels, are present throughout the house. A dogleg, curved service stair with decorative metal railings leads to the upper floors, and there is a small barrel vaulted cellar.
To the south of the house, a U-plan garden wall of coursed rubble, dating to 1868, partially encloses a terraced garden. A single-storey, rectangular-plan former store with a gabled roof and stone coping is attached to the west. The terraced garden is a remnant of a larger garden that existed before the 1950s, prior to the introduction of a hydro-electric power scheme to Loch Tummel. Excluded from the listing are the former laundry and stable building to the northwest.
