Description
Inch Dovecot, located on Gilmerton Road in Edinburgh, is an early 17th century, two-chambered, symmetrical, rectangular-plan lectern doocot built from pink sandstone rubble. It features boarded doors for each chamber, a rat course above, and crowsteps on the side walls. A central recessed rectangular panel rat course is present. The doocot has five flight holes at eaves level above the doorways and sixteen flight holes in each chamber set within the mid-roof band. The roof is covered with pantiles and has beak skewputts.
The interior, observed in 2015, includes a concrete floor and a timber roof, with over 2,000 stone nesting boxes extending from floor to ceiling on all sides of each chamber.
