Description
The Dovecot at the Hermitage of Braid on Braid Road in Edinburgh dates from the late 17th to early 18th century. It is a substantial rectangular-plan double-chamber lectern dovecot constructed from variegated sandstone rubble with stugged dressings.
The building features a gabled rear wall, shaped side gables, and a lean-to roof. On the south wall, there are two barred doors and two rectangular openings situated above a continuous projecting rat-course. The eaves are rounded with a moulded eaves gutter, and there are two gabled openings in the roof.
Inside, the dovecot is lined with 1,965 stone nesting boxes. Additionally, there are remains of a tall rubble wall with heavy buttresses to the north.
