Description
The Dovecot at Ratho Park in Edinburgh dates back to 1713 and is a two-stage, two-chambered lectern dovecot. It is constructed of rubble with partial harling, featuring stugged sandstone margins and quoins, as well as a rat-course. The building originally had a lean-to roof with crow-stepped gables, but it is now roofless.
On the south elevation, the dovecot is symmetrical with two bays. It has doors that provide access to separate chambers, and above these doors are sandstone oculus flight-holes. The lintels above the doors are inscribed with the monogram AF and the date 1713. Inside, there are sandstone nesting boxes, with a total of 1,641, some of which have been infilled. The north, east, and west elevations are blank.
