Norton Mains

Norton Mains is a farmhouse built in the earlier to mid 19th century, likely before 1853, with some alterations made in the later 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan structure featuring a single-storey jamb to the south. The exterior is constructed of coursed whinstone with ashlar margins and dressings, and it has droved quoins, a base course, and an eaves course.

The main elevation is symmetrical, with a slightly advanced entrance bay at the center. This features an ashlar corniced and pilastered doorcase, a fielded panelled door, and a sun-burst fanlight above. There are tripartite windows, likely from the later 19th century, at the ground floor and a single window at the first floor in the flanking bays, with a blank wall of the L-shaped jamb recessed to the outer left.

On the rear elevation, windows are symmetrically arranged in the outer bays. There is a stair window at the center with small windows to the left and right. A lean-to porch is located at the penultimate bay to the left, with a door in the left return. A single-storey jamb is to the right, and there is a rendered modern addition to the outer left. The main elevation features plate glass sash and case windows, while the rear elevation has 12-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with tall broad whinstone wallhead stacks.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in September 1992.

Surrounding the farmhouse are high rubble garden walls with semi-circular coping that enclose the garden to the east and north.

The steading, which dates to the early 19th century with later 19th-century additions and alterations, is arranged in a quadrangular plan around a central cattle court.

The north range includes an implement shed to the outer right supported by four cast-iron columns, and a four-bay cottage that is symmetrical with an outer left bay. It has a central door flanked by windows, with a bipartite window to the left, a single window to the right, and a single window to the outer left. A mutual skew divides the main cottage from the end bay.

The east range features a two-bay corner of the cottage to the outer right, a passageway, and a cattle shed at the center with a curved corner. There is also a taller gabled cart-shed at the center.

The north range consists of a long, five-bay, rectangular-plan stable and granary store. The outer left bay has a cart-opening, with stable doors and windows to the right. A hoist door is located at the center, and the windows have a four-pane upper section with a boarded lower portion.
