Description

The Norton Hotel in Edinburgh features a Tudor-Gothic railway bridge built around 1841. This single-span bridge carries the railway over the main drive of Norton House. It has rusticated ashlar abutments and stepped buttresses that end in chamfered, octagonal piers on either side of the driveway. A decorative cast-iron balustrade enhances the structure, while the bridge itself includes a 4-centered arched cast-iron girder span with perforated quatrefoils in the spandrels, which currently conceal modern concrete repairs. A flight of stone steps leads down to the old railway line at the northeast.
