Description

The bridge over the railway is a Grade II listed structure, constructed between 1837 and 1840, with minor alterations made in the late 20th century. It is believed to have been built to a standard design, with an indenture from December 5, 1837, referencing specifications and drawings prepared under the direction of George Stephenson and Frederick Swanwick, the principal engineers for the North Midland Railway Company.

The bridge is made of ashlar and regularly coursed squared Derbyshire gritstone. It features a single arch that carries a residential road over the railway, aligned east-west.

The exterior of the bridge showcases a wide elliptical arch that rises from ashlar skewbacks, with V-jointed ashlar voussoirs beneath a deep roll moulding. Above this moulding is an ashlar plinth course and two courses of rectangular gritstone blocks that form the parapet walls. The bridge is topped with deep, wide ashlar copings that have rounded upper edges. Substantial abutments with V-jointed ashlar quoins are present at either end of the bridge, and the roll moulding continues into the adjacent flanking walls of the railway cutting.
