Description

The building is a railway accommodation overbridge constructed between 1837 and 1840 as part of the development of the North Midland Railway, with minor alterations made in the late 20th century. It is believed to have been built to a standard design, with references to specifications and plans prepared under the direction of George Stephenson and Frederick Swanwick, the principal engineers for the North Midland Railway Company.

The bridge is made of ashlar and regularly coursed squared Derbyshire gritstone, featuring brick linings to the arch soffit. It is a single-arch overbridge that carries a footpath over the railway, aligned east-west.

The bridge has a wide segmental arch that springs from an impost band set on ashlar quoining. The arch is constructed from V-jointed ashlar voussoirs beneath a deep roll moulding. Above the moulding, there is an ashlar plinth course and a single course of rectangular gritstone blocks that form the parapet walls. The parapet is topped with deep, wide ashlar copings that have rounded upper edges. At either end of the bridge, there are substantial slightly splayed abutment walls that terminate at ashlar quoins, which extend slightly beyond the arch spandrels.
