Description

The building is a road bridge over a railway, constructed between 1837 and 1840. It is believed to have been built to a standard design, with an indenture dated December 5, 1837, referencing specifications and drawings prepared under the direction of George Stephenson and Frederick Swanwick, the principal and resident engineers for the North Midland Railway Company.

The materials used for the bridge include ashlar and regularly coursed squared Derbyshire gritstone. The bridge features a single arch that carries a section of road on a residential street over the railway, aligned east-west.

The exterior of the bridge showcases a wide elliptical arch that rises from ashlar skewbacks, with ashlar voussoirs positioned below a deep roll moulding. Above the moulding is an ashlar plinth course, followed by two courses of rectangular gritstone blocks that form the parapet walls. The bridge is topped with deep, wide ashlar copings that have rounded upper edges. At either end of the bridge, there are substantial abutments with V-jointed ashlar quoins. The roll moulding of the bridge extends into the adjacent flanking walls of the railway cutting.
