Description
The bridge and steps at Alton Station were built around 1849 and are constructed from rock-faced ashlar with smooth-faced ashlar coping. The bridge features a single segmental arch with chamfered voussoirs that spring from imposts, a half roll-moulded parapet band, and a low parapet topped with iron railings. There are flights of steps on both the left and right sides, each with moulded handrails. This structure is an important part of the group of buildings in the Churnet Valley, which includes The Tudor Lodge, the former stationmaster's house, and the former waiting room. The bridge and steps were originally used for the now disused Churnet Valley Railway, which opened in 1849. This listing is included for its group value.
