Description
The former stationmaster's house at Alton Railway Station dates from around 1849 and is designed in the Italianate style. It is constructed of rock-faced ashlar with smooth-faced ashlar dressings and features hipped and gabled pantile roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a square block at the southeast corner and wings extending to the north and west. The entrance to the three-storey building is on the left, featuring a second-floor band and a pyramidal roof topped with a finial. To the right, there is a slightly recessed single-storey wing. The house has a symmetrical facade with one-to-one bays, casements with raised surrounds, and a bracketed openwork balcony above the first-floor window. Alton station served the now disused Churney Valley Railway, which opened in 1849.
