Description

Liberton Bank House, located at 1 Gilmerton Road in Edinburgh, is a traditional house dating from the late 18th century, with later alterations and additions. It is a single storey building with an attic and has a three-bay rectangular plan. The structure is built from sandstone and red sandstone rubble, featuring droved sandstone dressings, quoins, long and short surrounds, and coped skews. The house has modern box dormers.

The front elevation is symmetrical, with an infilled doorway at the center of the ground floor. There is evidence of a gabled entrance porch addition, including a low rendered brick wall in front of the doorway. The flanking bays have bipartite windows with block cills. All bays at the roof feature box dormers, with slate aprons on the central one.

The north side elevation has three bays, with a corrugated-iron roof over a lean-to porch at the ground level. There is a single window in the center with a block cill, and infilled doorways with wooden lintels flanking it. Above, there is a pair of windows on the first floor.

The south side elevation has two bays, with widely spaced infilled doorways at the ground and closely spaced windows with block cills on the first floor.

The rear elevation is irregularly fenestrated, featuring a box dormer on the roof at the left and a coped rubble wall adjoining at the right. Many window openings and doorways have been blocked, and the dormers are boarded. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a leaded ridge, with coped gablehead stacks that have moulded cylindrical cans. The cast-iron gutters and downpipes are missing.

Inside, there are probably original fielded six-panelled doors and later 19th-century fireplaces in the bedrooms. Decorative painted schemes and canvas floorcloth surrounds can be found in the northeast and south bedrooms. There are remains of hand-printed wallpaper and decorative schemes, particularly in the hall, stairs, and landing, likely from the mid to late 19th century. The original floorboards are still present, along with hand-tooled rafters and broad sarking boards in the roof. Alterations include the insertion of box dormers, a new staircase, re-plastering, and replacement or new cornices in several rooms.
