Description
This building is a hotel located at 12 Lygon Road in Edinburgh, dating from the late 19th century. It features a modern garage adjoining to the east. The structure consists of two storeys and an attic, arranged as a symmetrical pair of houses with baronial detailing. The exterior is made of coursed cream sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings on the main facade, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a cornice above the ground floor windows, a cill course to the first floor windows, and a cornice with a parapet above the first floor windows.
On the south elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are roll moulded, angled doorways in the two central bays, featuring carved panels and cable moulding above. The entrance includes panelled doors and small paned fanlights. Above the entrance, there are single windows on the first floor, and a central, advanced wallhead stack that is corbelled out, flanked by pedimented attic windows. The outer bays on the right and left have full-height, four-light canted windows, while the attic features bipartite windows set in crowstepped gables.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with plate glass, and the canted bays have small paned upper lights in their mullioned and transomed windows. The roof is a grey slate mansard, with corniced and coped wallhead stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is enclosed by a low coped boundary wall along the street, with replacement railings.
