Description

Hassendean Cottage, located on Bakers Road in Gattonside, is likely a late 18th century house with mid 19th century additions at the rear. This two-storey, symmetrical, three-bay traditional house features a moulded corniced doorpiece that is flanked by bi-partite windows, which have been enlarged later, and are set within stone mullions. The exterior is finished with harled rubble and has ashlar margins. Small square attic windows are present on both gable ends.

At the rear, there is a gabled, single-storey drawing room addition that includes a tri-partite window, along with a lean-to porch at the re-entrant angle adjoining the west elevation. A very tall stack is located at the rear, and there is a run of single-storey outbuildings extending north into the garden at the northwest corner. A decorative wrought-iron gate provides access to the road.

The house features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The pitched roof is covered with grey slate and has straight stone skews and beaked skewputts, along with end stacks that have clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present, and there is a large sloping garden at the rear.

Inside, the cottage includes a barrel vaulted cellar that was formerly a kiln. The internal arrangement is split-level, connected by a stairwell landing that has a timber balustrade and handrail. The kitchen contains early 19th century fitted timber cupboards and drawers, while the attic rooms have timber boarded walls and ceilings.
