Description

The Gattonside Suspension Footbridge in Melrose was built in 1826 by Redpath Brown and Co from Edinburgh. This footbridge features iron-link suspension chains and iron rods for vertical suspenders, supporting a wooden deck. The pylons are designed in a Gothic style, with central pointed arched openings and corbelled and crenellated heads. The structure is harled with dressed ashlar stone, and it includes delicate cast-iron Gothic tracery in the heads of the arches.
