Description
The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, located on Pomarium Street, was built between 1938 and 1939 by architects Erskine, Thomson & Glass. This single-storey church features a crow-stepped gabled design and is symmetrical in layout, reflecting the Arts and Crafts style. It is harled with artificial stone dressings, including a tall base course, raised cills, and a cavetto eaves course.
The eastern entrance elevation has steps leading up to a central round-arched entrance, which is fitted with a two-leaf timber door. On either side of the entrance are small window openings. The northern elevation consists of five bays, with the central three bays featuring steep pedimented dormer heads that break the eaves line. To the left, there is a flat with an advanced crow-stepped bay that includes a canted bay window on the eastern elevation.
The church predominantly has large, 12-pane timber sash and case windows with top-opening hoppers, while the flat features 12-pane timber windows with horns. The roofs are piended at the rear and covered with green slates, featuring raised skews and skewputts. There are wallhead stacks, a ridge stack, and a tall single stack on the western side.
Inside, as observed in 2009, the original layout of the church remains largely intact. It features timber dado panelling and a part-glazed two-leaf interior swing door, along with additional two-panel timber doors. The flat includes Art Deco walnut-effect fire surrounds and one tiled fire surround, with a part-glazed entrance door on the southern side and two-panel timber doors throughout.
