Description
Calton Old Parish Church and Halls, located at 122 Helenvale Street in Glasgow, was designed by Hutton & Taylor and built between 1934 and 1935. This Neo-Romanesque church for the Church of Scotland features a double-height nave and single-storey aisles, with a transverse aisle and a narrow saddleback campanile at the northeast. To the south, there are two single-storey halls arranged in a T-plan. The building is constructed of red brick, with a base course and brick mutules at the wall and gable heads. The windows are round-headed, featuring brick voussoirs.
On the northeast elevation, the entrance front has a pair of doorways beneath a trio of stepped lancet windows, with a single window in the northeast aisle. The east elevation includes paired round-headed windows in the clerestory, rectangular windows in the aisle, a single lancet in the northeast transept, and a trio of lancets in the southeast transept. The south elevation features an apsidal projection with a dropped roof and a trio of lancets with coloured glass, along with a square chimneystack. The north hall has a flank to the east with three sets of windows in a Serlian arrangement that break through the eaves, while the south hall has a gable to the east with a Serlian arrangement on the gable. The south elevation is harled, with lancets breaking through the eaves.
The interior has a basilica arrangement with brick arcades supported by grey stone columns. The ceiling features a plastered barrel vault with brick ridges and timber tie beams, and there is a dais beneath the chancel arch. The church contains timber pews, a pulpit, and various fittings, with a transverse arrangement of pews in the aisles. Stained glass includes a depiction of the crucifixion in the chancel from 1970 and St Luke in the aisle from 1971, both created by Gordon Webster.
The boundary is marked by dwarf walls with metal railings and gates.
