1452 Gallowgate, Glasgow

1450 Gallowgate in Glasgow is a building designed by John Keppie of Honeyman Keppie and Mackintosh, constructed between 1907 and 1908. It originally served as the Glasgow Savings Bank and features a prominent five-storey structure located on a corner site. The building is adorned with Renaissance ornamentation and sculpture, including a curved corner bay that houses the bank entrance. Above this, there are vertical shafts and a domed attic room with aedicules. The elevations consist of three bays, and there is a low single-storey banking hall facing Burgher Street. The building has prominent stacks, with roofs that are concealed from street view.

The base is made of red granite, while the upper sections are finished in contrasting stone-cleaned ashlar. The interior is notable, featuring an entrance hall with marble Ionic screens and elaborate timberwork in the banking hall, which includes counters, chimney pieces, and overmantels. There is also a glazed roof dome with intricate plasterwork.

Additionally, there is a tenement doorway on Gallowgate and rear access decks leading to flats. A sculptured group in a niche in the tower represents Prudence strangling Want, symbolized by a wolf, created by Archibald McFarlane Shannan.
