Description
St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, located at 1350 Gallowgate in Glasgow, was designed by Alexander McAnally and constructed between 1965 and 1969. This church features an 11-bay, approximately rectangular plan in a stripped modern Gothic style, with an aisleless layout, a canted apse, and a large narthex. It is situated at the east end of Glasgow, in an area predominantly consisting of tenement houses above shops. Note that later extensions to the south and the presbytery are excluded from the listing.
The exterior is constructed from Nori rustic red and brown facing brick, accented with buff sandstone dressings. It features mainly triangular-headed window and door openings, plain pier buttresses, and an eaves course. A tall tapering brick buttress on the east side is topped with a large sculptural figure of St Michael and the dragon, made from synthetic stone by the Jack Mortimer Company. The church also includes distinctive circular-patterned glass in fixed-light metal windows and has 'Lockroll' aluminium roofing.
Inside, as observed in 2015, the church retains many original 1960s fittings, including ceiling lights, pews, and doors with unique diagonally-patterned timberwork and circular-patterned glazed lights. The interior walls are finished with cream-colored bricks, and the ceiling is made of cedarwood. The triangular-headed shape of the exterior openings is echoed in the chancel arch, apse, communion rail, high altar, and the niches and tabernacle on the rear wall of the sanctuary. The sanctuary features extensive marble work on the floor, communion rail, and high altar, incorporating three different types of marble.
A rectangular plan presbytery, which is not part of this listing, is connected to the northwest of the church.
