Description

St Michael's Church is a parish church located on Upper Orwell Street, built around 1880, with a chancel added in 1890. It was designed by E.F. Bisshopp and constructed by Robert Girling. The church features a nave and aisles, along with a chancel and a western bellcote. It is made of red brick with ashlar dressings and has plain tile roofs with coped gables and kneelers.

The western entrance front includes a projecting central porch with coped gables, kneelers, and a cross finial. There is a pointed outer arched doorway with a hood mould and label stops, topped by a small circular window. Above this, a three-light pointed arched window with geometrical tracery is also adorned with a hood mould and label stops. The gable is crowned by a gabled bellcote featuring a pair of pointed arched openings for the bells. Each of the western walls of the aisles has a pair of plain lancet windows. The clerestory is marked by a single large through eaves dormer window on either side, each containing three lancets.

On the eastern wall, there is a large pointed arched window with a hood mould and label stops, which contains three triple-light windows with intersecting tracery, the central one being taller. Inside, the church displays a simple blue brick polychromatic pattern on the walls. The nave features a five-bay arcade with circular piers that have finely carved capitals and moulded brick arches. The nave roof is elaborately wooden, complemented by contemporary fittings.
