Description
The mosaic mural at the former department store of the Ipswich Industrial Co-operative Society was designed by Gyula Bajó and Endre Hevezi and installed between 1963 and 1964.
The mural is made up of thousands of coloured mosaic tiles and is attached to the south elevation of the former department store over Cox Lane. It is rectangular, approximately 3 meters high and 6 meters wide, featuring a semi-abstract design with contrasting shapes and colours that depict a male and a female figure. The female figure, likely representing Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest and agriculture, kneels to the left of centre holding a large wheatsheaf. Behind her lies Hermes, depicted recumbent, wearing his winged helmet and sandals, and holding a caduceus, which is a winged staff intertwined with two snakes. The mural is supported over Cox Lane by two rectangular piers that are also covered in mosaic.
