Description
No. 18 Carr Street is a shop and offices built in 1888 by T.W. Cotman for Mr. Scheurmann. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a machine-tiled roof. It is designed in a Flemish style, with the gable end facing the street. The structure has four storeys and a narrow facade, with a three-window range.
The late 20th-century shop front is made of plate glass and is flanked by marble pilasters that support cast-iron railings. On the first floor, there are two semicircular windows, each fitted with two 2/2 horned sashes. Between these windows is a moulded arched recess that contains a French window with glazing bars and margin lights. The upper two floors are divided by a flat pilaster and feature one polygonal colonnette on each side of the elevation.
The second floor has two 8/8 horned sashes set within separate moulded arched recesses, which are fronted by cast-iron railings. The third floor also has two similar windows. The building is topped with an elaborate shaped gable that includes a finial, and it has a gabled roof with a large internal gable-end stack on the west side.
