Description
44 Butter Market is a 16th-century timber-framed building, although its front was rebuilt in the early 19th century. It has two storeys and features a two-window range with double-hung sashes that lack glazing bars. The ground floor includes an Edwardian shop front. At the rear, there is a long wing with a jettied upper storey extending to the south. The south end has two bays, also jettied, which appear to be of a later date. The ground floor rooms boast high ceilings with moulded ceiling beams and joists, featuring multiple rod mouldings similar to those found in Nos 40 and 42. On the first storey, original tie beams can be seen along with remnants of long arched braces, as well as sections of square Jacobean panelling.
