Description
No 40 Butter Market is originally the western half of a large 16th-century timber-framed house, with No 42 being the eastern half. It originally featured a similar frontage to No 42, complete with double jetties, but was refronted in stucco in the early 19th century, adding a parapet and undergoing further alterations. The building has three storeys and a four-window range, with casements that have moulded architraves. The ground storey includes a 20th-century shop front. The roof is tiled and continuous with that of No 42, featuring a central chimney stack. At the rear, there is a jettied range that runs at right angles to the front, with two bays at the south end that appear to be of a later date. Inside, the building boasts high ceilings with exposed beams and joists that have roll mouldings, similar to those in No 42, as well as some sections of square Jacobean panelling. The original structure is not visible from the front of the building.
