Description
The Church of St Lawrence is a 15th-century aisleless church featuring a tall west tower that serves as a prominent landmark in the town. The nave includes impressive perpendicular windows situated between buttresses, which were constructed after 1449 using funds from John Baldwyn, who passed away that year. The west tower, which began construction around 1431 with financial support from John Bottold, was largely rebuilt in 1882. It rises to a height of 97 feet and is richly decorated with stepped openwork battlements, extensive flushwork, bands of quatrefoil, and chequered stone and flintwork. The tower also features large three-light bell openings and a doorway adorned with 15th-century carving. Inside, the church contains several 18th-century monuments and a brass memorial dated 1506 for Robert Wymball, a notary, noted to be the earliest known memorial for someone in this profession. The Church of St Lawrence is part of a group with Nos 2 and 4 and Nos 8 to 12 (even).
