Description

The United Reformed Church, originally a Congregational Church, was built in 1857 and designed by Frederick J. Barnes, with construction by John Wight. It is in the Gothic Revival style and features Kentish rag stone with ashlar dressings, along with slate roofs that have coped gables, kneelers, and finials. The church has a chamfered plinth and angle buttresses with set-offs. It consists of a nave and a short chancel, with a prominent large south porch.

On the south elevation, there is a two-storey gabled porch to the west, which has attached octagonal stair towers intended for spires that were never constructed. The central pointed archway is flanked by narrower pointed archways, all featuring moulded arches and pillar responds. Above these are flush gables with finials and blind tracery. The central inner doorway is a moulded and pointed arch. Above it is a moulded band that continues around the stair towers, leading to a circular window with a moulded surround and elaborate symmetrical tracery. Each flanking stair tower has a pointed arch doorway with a plain flush gable, and above are three pointed lancets with tracery, capped by a moulded coped parapet.

To the east, the nave facade displays three very tall two-light lancets with tracery, each separated at gallery level by a pair of stone panels with blind tracery. The east gable wall features a single pointed arch five-light window with tracery.

Inside, the church has a thin iron columned arcade that supports the wooden gallery and continues upward to support the roof, which is ornately carved. The interior also includes 19th-century wooden fittings such as a pulpit, pews, and an organ.
