Description

The Church of St. Michael is a church that was rebuilt in 1817, with the chancel added in 1896. It is constructed of rendered rubble with sandstone dressings and has a slate roof. The south wall features projecting quoins and three cross windows, each with cusped heads for the upper lights, panel tracery above, and hood moulds. To the right of these windows is a chamfered door with a two-centred head and hood. To the left, there is a gabled porch with a chamfered doorway that has a four-centred head. Above the porch is a large slate inscribed with the words: 'This Chapel was rebuilt Anno Domini 1817 ....' The gables are topped with copings, with a cross at the apex of the eastern gable and a square open stone bellcote on the western gable. The west wall contains a chamfered lancet window, while the north wall has four windows similar to those on the south wall, but without hoods. The lower chancel is made of exposed rubble and features an east window with a four-centred head, hood, and four pointed, cusped lights. There is a vestry against the north wall, which includes a re-set Perpendicular window with two cusped lights and panel tracery above, set under a flat head. Inside, there is a west gallery dating from 1825, supported by two slim iron columns and decorated with tracery on its front. The shallow chancel has an arch of two chamfered orders and is lined with rock-faced sandstone. The east window depicts the birth of Christ. The font is a plain sandstone bowl on a base made from re-used dressed masonry. A flat modern ceiling conceals the roof structure.
