Description
The Church of St. Michael is a parish church built between 1848 and 1850 by architect S. S. Teulon. It is constructed from squared ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with stone-coped gables. The church comprises a nave with a western bellcote, a south porch, and a chancel.
The west wall slightly projects and is buttressed, supporting an elaborate bellcote that has a pointed arch flanked by crocketted finials, with a gable and cross above. The two-light west window has cusped ogee heads. The north wall of the nave contains two two-light windows, and the north wall of the chancel also has two two-light windows. The east window features three lights with reticulated tracery at the top. The south wall of the chancel has two two-light windows and a single chamfered priest's door with a pointed head. The south wall of the nave includes two two-light windows. All windows are adorned with cusped ogee heads, reticulated heads, and chamfered hood moulds with floriate labels.
The gabled south porch has a single chamfered outer doorway with a hood mould and floriate stops, side benches, and a moulded and pointed inner doorway with human head label stops. Inside, the chancel arch is double chamfered and supported by octagonal corbels. There is an open chancel screen with cusped arched panels. The sanctuary features a 19th-century encaustic tiled floor, and the altar rails have ogee panels. Behind the altar are three cusped stone recessed quatrefoil panels. Most fittings date from the 19th or 20th century, except for the plain 14th-century octagonal font.
